Spark the Wave looking for teen leaders
Posted by on March 22, 2010
Thank you for continuing to help Spark the Wave to grow and succeed. Your efforts have assisted in empowering teens to become strong leaders and advocates of community service. Thus far, STW has impacted a total of 15,000 teens through our seminars and week-long summer program! Here’s the good news: You can easily nominate as many students as you wish to extend STW’s reach even farther and to assist us in reaching our goal of 200 delegates for Wave Week 2010.
We have received a grant from the National Military Families Association for the second year in a row! This organization works to provide an atmosphere for military kids to have fun in an educational environment while establishing relationships with children who have the shared experience of a parent deployed. This grant will allow up to fifty delegates of military families to come to Wave Week cost-free, and is a wonderful recruitment opportunity.
This year, Wave Week will take place July 18-23 at Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania. Wave Week provides a diverse learning environment that encourages teens to develop their skills in effective communication, group dynamics, motivation, public speaking, diversity awareness, and event and project planning. In addition, teens experience a taste of the future by spending the week on a beautiful college campus!
We are looking for positive, creative, and open-minded students to join us this year at Wave Week. STW has two tracks of classes at Wave Week: one for 7th-9th grade students and one for 10th-11th grade students. Keep in mind that this refers to the 2009-10 school year. Participants will work, learn, and room with others close to their own age.
The following is a list of steps for recruiting students:
1. Hand out application information to anyone you believe would be interested and has the potential to benefit from our program. If possible, contact their parents/guardians first.
2. Point out the additional benefits of attending Wave Week:
a. Delegates will receive a certificate documenting 40 hours of community service upon completion of the camp.
b. Attending a service-learning camp adds depth to a college application.
c. Delegates will gain valuable skills that can benefit them not only in the area of service but also with the future.
3. Follow up with students to make sure they have sent in the application or filled it out online.
4. Accept our thanks for all the assistance you have given to Spark the Wave!!!
Due to the selective nature of the process, we suggest that applications get in as soon as possible. April 15th is the early deadline. June 30th is the late deadline. Please see our application for tuition rates.
