Community Governance Is Critical for Better Data-Informed Decisions
Posted by Stanford Social Innovation Review on October 27, 2026
When the people most affected by a problem are treated as sources of credible evidence, are able to govern how the information they share is used, and can ultimately guide decisions, it helps ensure that dominant institutions are less likely to misdiagnose problems, invest in ineffective solutions, or create programs people can’t use. Community governance practices make this possible, and they are available to any nonprofit or group that wants to build stronger relationships with the people they serve. Leaders from across the United States share their insights in this new article, part of an ongoing series on transforming data for equity and justice.
