Student Essay Contest

The Southwestern PA Regional Network for the Growth of Service-Learning (SPRING) is currently accepting submissions for our 2010 Service-Learning Student Essay Contest to determine what impact service-learning has on both students and the community in which they live.

The contest will be in conjunction with our Symposium happening on March 24, 2010, hosted by the University of Pittsburgh. The theme for this year’s Symposium is “Transforming Institutions… Transforming Communities.” Prizes will be given out to the first ($75.00), second ($50.00), and third ($25.00) place winners in the form of a gift card, as well as free registration to our event.

Deadline for Student Essay Submission is February 22, 2010.

Event Details
Join colleagues for SPRING’s third annual symposium. The annual symposium is held so that those interested in service-learning at the college and university level can come together to share their experiences, learn from one another, and discover potential areas for collaboration.  This year’s theme, “Transforming Institutions… Transforming Communities” gives attendees a look at the way in which service-learning has the ability to, and in many cases is responsible for increasing the quality of life within our community through civic engagement in higher education.

Conference participants will include faculty, administrators, and community service providers who wish to discuss service-learning and the ways it can positively impact our region.

About SPRING
The SPRING service-learning network promotes service-learning among institutions of higher education in the Southwestern Pennsylvania region.  It is a regional network of institutions, comprised of colleges, universities, and community organizations.

Service-learning is an educational method, in which students perform meaningful service to meet community-identified needs while reflecting on their actions in a way that allows them to better understand course concepts, the role their discipline plays in society, and their civic identity.
