Temple, Drexel sponsor summit on education and civil rights
Schools, Education and the Ongoing Civil Rights Struggle is the theme of the second annual leadership summit of The REACH Project, sponsored by Temple University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Drexel University’s Multicultural Collaborative.
Despite the landmark Supreme Court ruling in Brown versus Board of Education more than 50 years ago, education continues to be a site of struggle.
In this age of high stakes testing and No Child Left Behind, access to a safe school environment and quality education is increasingly elusive for children and youth in Philadelphia’s schools. Recent Supreme Court rulings and other policy changes have also undermined the college aspirations of many students of color and diminished their numbers on college campuses.
This second summit, to be held on Saturday, February 20th, will examine important issues and effective strategies used to bring about change in schools. The summit will be divided into two organizing strands: Critical Issues in Education and Organizing Strategies.
The event will be held at Temple’s Gittis Student Center at 13th and Berks Streets and will also feature a luncheon keynote by Dr. Marc Lamont Hill of Columbia University.
