Notre Dame ‘25 Institute on Teaching Social Action – Sep 27-28
Posted by Teaching Social Action on August 5, 2025
We would like to invite you to apply to the Notre Dame ’25 Institute on Teaching Social Action on September 27-28, 2025. Today, many college courses teach about democracy and change, but few courses provide students the opportunity to learn by doing them. The Notre Dame ’25 Institute meets this need by providing faculty the necessary training to teach social action.
The registration-free Notre Dame ’25 Institute will be led by Dr. Arun Agrawal, Professor of Development Policy at Notre Dame University, Professor Sally Eck, Women’s Studies at Portland State University, and by Dr. Scott Myers-Lipton, a sociologist who developed a social action course at San José State in 2006, and taught it 30 times. Visit our website to learn more about our social action model, as well as explore the 46 social action courses to be taught this Fall semester.
Here is what Arun has to say about the training: “The Institute was one of the most effective uses of my time in my 30+ years in higher education. The Institute provided a structure and the tools to implement social action in an organized and meaningful way as a part of the educational experience. I left the Institute invigorated, armed with new knowledge and tools. I wondered where the Social Action Institute had been all of my higher ed life.”
The application deadline is due on Monday, September 15th. The Notre Dame ’25 Institute will run from Saturday, September 27th, 8:30 am-4pm, and Sunday, September 28th, 8:30 am-3 pm; food will be covered during the Institute. If you have any questions, please email Scott at smlipton@sjsu.edu.
