Renewing Higher Education’s Civic and Democratic Mission
Posted by Campus Compact on July 29, 2025
Bobbie Laur, Campus Compact President, recently returned from the 2025 Global Forum: Renewal of the Democratic and Civic Mission, hosted at Charles University in Prague. The Forum, a collaboration among the Council of Europe, the International Consortium, the Organization of American States, and the International Association of Universities, brought together global higher education leaders to reaffirm the civic mission of universities.
Keynotes included Ira Harkavy, Director of the Netter Center for Community Partnerships at the University of Pennsylvania, who urged institutions to function as democratic civic universities, and Patrick Deane, Principal and Vice-Chancellor at Queen’s University (Canada), who warned that without academic freedom and autonomy, what remains is no longer a university.
