Dollar For Fights for Low-Income Patients to Access Charity Care

In this Spotlight Exclusive, we speak with Dollar For founder Jared Walker about the staggering $220 billion in U.S. medical debt owed by Americans – and the “hidden” relief available through hospital financial assistance programs. Walker discusses how his nonprofit helps low-income patients access legally required charity care, which many hospitals obscure with complicated, inconsistent application processes. “Since 2021, we’ve been able to eliminate over $94 million in medical debt for people all over the country and then even do some policy work to strengthen charity care laws,” he says.
While federal law gives patients 240 days to apply for aid, response timelines and eligibility standards vary by state, creating further barriers. Hospitals are often uncooperative with patients, but Walker’s team continues to submit thousands of applications and advocate for patients at every stage. “We really try to give patients peace of mind,” he says.
