The Classroom as a Democratic Space

Posted by Pulitzer Center on February 18, 2025

During Black History Month, we are excited to continue highlighting resources and opportunities to get you and your students up close to Black history, and connect with reporting on topics affecting Black communities today.

In the aftermath of last year’s U.S. presidential elections, your students may have come to you with questions about the process and its results, or may be sparking discussions about civics and the history of American democracy. This latest resource collection gathers units created by our 1619 Education partners and offers a menu of implementable learning activities that take a magnifying glass to themes of democracy, identity, resistance, and liberation. Built for a diverse range of learners, these units center on expanding students’ understanding of U.S. history and democracy and support civic awareness on a local and national level.
