Dr. Ala Stanford in Conversation with WHYY’s Cherri Gregg – Aug 22
Posted by Free Library of Philadelphia on August 20, 2024
Join WHYY Studio 2 co-host Cherri Gregg for a WHYY/Free Library of Philadelphia for a fireside chat with Dr. Ala Stanford, author of the new memoir, Take Care of Them Like My Own on Thursday, August 22nd from 5:30-6:30 at the Parkway Central Library at 1901 Vine Street in Philadelphia.
Dr. Stanford, a pediatric surgeon, started the Black Doctors Consortium in 2020 as she watched the COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affect Black Philadelphians. Traveling around the city in a rented van stocked with medical supplies, Dr. Stanford and a handful of volunteers, provided free COVID vaccines and tests to tens of thousands of city residents. In recognition of her life-saving contributions, President Biden appointed her to lead regional operations at the U.S Department of Health and Human Services in 2022. Since leaving that post, she founded the Dr. Ala Stanford Center for Health Equity in Philadelphia.
Cherri will talk with Dr. Stanford about her memoir, Take Care of Them Like My Own, about growing up in North Philadelphia, the racism and sexism she overcame to become a surgeon, and her continuing fight for racial justice and equity in health care.
