Posted by The Center for Black Educator Development on March 26, 2024

The Center for Black Educator Development is currently enrolling for our 2024 free virtual Freedom Schools Literacy Academy! Designed to empower 1st to 3rd grade scholars, our program provides invaluable support and instruction to enhance reading skills and bolster academic confidence throughout the summer.

Our Freedom Schools Literacy Academy is a 4-week summer program designed to empower rising 1st through 3rd grade scholars. With the guidance of experienced educators, college students (or college-aged individuals) and high school students serve as teaching apprentices to provide literacy intervention and an affirming environment that celebrates our scholars’ culture and racial identity. Your child is invited to join us virtually this summer!

Who Can participate?: Your child must a rising 1st, rising 2nd, or rising 3rd grader by the summer to participate in FSLA.  (This means they are entering those grades in the upcoming school year.) They can be enrolled in any school across the country.

What Are the Dates and Times?: Our virtual sessions take place from Mondays through Thursdays from Monday, July 8th to Thursday, August 1st, 2024, 8:00am-11:30am.  Spaces are limited, so apply early to secure your child’s spot!  Experience the warmth of belonging, the joy of learning, and the pride of cultural identity as your child makes leaps in literacy.

What Can I Expect Daily?: Each day begins with Harambee, a cultural call-and-response practice whereby students engage in affirming chants and cheers. Students engage in Read Aloud’s as a whole class then split into small groups for differentiated literacy instruction, using a research-backed and evidenced-based curriculum. During their project-based learning block, students create their own social action projects based on community or social issues of their choosing. Before instructional blocks, students participate in mindfulness activities as fun brain-breaks and ways to center themselves.

Enroll now to secure your child’s spot and ignite their academic journey!
