Updated Resources for Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program Renewals
Posted by AmeriCorps on November 14, 2023
To further our shared goal of strengthening communities across the country, we are sharing resources from the Department of Health and Human Services regarding Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program coverage. The Department of Health and Human Services anticipates that up to 15 million people, including millions of children, could lose their Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program coverage this annual renewal period, the first renewal required since the pandemic began. Parents who are no longer eligible for Medicaid coverage may not know that their children may still be eligible and may not return their renewal forms. If your organization serves individuals who may need access to information regarding these health insurance programs, we encourage you to share the resources below.
Background
In March 2020, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services temporarily waived certain Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program requirements and conditions. The easing of these rules helped prevent people from losing their health coverage during the pandemic. In a normal year, about 17 million people have their Medicaid coverage terminated – some because they’re no longer eligible, and others because they struggle with the renewal paperwork. That means that during the pandemic, more than 45 million Medicaid terminations did not happen.
Encourage your community members to renew their Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program coverage. Share these resources with any school or early learning partners you work with.
Community members should:
- update their contact information with their state Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance programs;
- check their mail regularly, since the state agency will mail a letter regarding coverage;
- complete their renewal form (if they have one); and
- if they no longer qualify for Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program, they may be able to get health coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
