Zoom Event: Promoting Civic and Political Engagement Among Incarcerated Students – Nov 16

Join us on Friday, November 16, 2023 from 11am-1pm (EST), for Promoting Civic and Political Engagement Among Incarcerated Students. The presenters are Katrina Hoop and Chandler Dugal.
Katrina Hoop, Ph.D. teaches for the Social Sciences division at the University of Maine at Augusta in the Prison Education Partnership and includes community based-learning/civic engagement as part of her teaching methodology. Chandler Dugal, M.P.A., completed his Master of Public Administration from Penn State and a Certificate in Paralegal Studies from the University of Maine at Augusta while incarcerated at the Maine Correctional Center. While incarcerated, Chandler was on two debate teams (against MIT and Boston College) for the National Prison Debate League and created a personal enrichment course titled “Tragic Optimism: Finding Meaning in Suffering” which he taught to his incarcerated peers. Katrina and Chandler will lead a workshop designed for 1) educators and college support staff who either teach college courses in a prison setting and who want to understand the potential for civic engagement or CBL as part of their learning outcomes and 2) faculty who are interested in learning about teaching in the carceral setting.
The funds for this presentation are provided by the Eastern Region Campus Consortium Grant Program.
