Philadelphia Youth Basketball, Inc. (PYB) was officially launched in June, 2015, with a mission to create transformative opportunities for thousands of young people, especially those from under-resourced families and communities, to reach their full potential as students, athletes, and positive leaders.  A diverse and impassioned group of individuals, including leaders from the grass-roots to the tree-tops, have been working diligently to execute upon this mission by building an impactful program, a robust and sustainable organization, and ultimately a state-of-the-art youth basketball and education center to enable us to provide empowering experiences to many more children, youth, and families.

We are looking for highly-motivated individuals to serve as a Head Coach-Mentor at an assigned MSPP site. Head Coach-Mentors interested in securing additional hours and serving 4 days per week could be assigned two sites. This position may include both in-school time and out-of-school time.

The Head Coach-Mentor must possess a passion for positive youth development and urban young people. Head Coach-Mentors will report to the Director of Neighborhood-Based Programs. He/she will be primarily responsible for:

  • Building the in-school culture between PYB and Partner School, including but not limited to:
    • Developing relationships with student-athlete’s teachers and school leadership team
    • Executing Pep Rallies
    • Student recruitment and act as the point of contact for PYB and the partnering school
    • Active participation in program and academic review processes
    • Tracking attendance and behavioral issues
  • Collaborating with Assistant Coach-Mentor to set on-court lesson plan each week;
  • Developing strong 1:1 relationships with PYB student-athletes;
  • Fostering stronger group identity formation with the PYB student-athlete cohort;
  • Facilitating on-court basketball youth development plan and coaching;
  • Delivering off-court curriculum focusing on topics including critical thinking, reading, writing and civic dialogue;
  • Retrieving information on prospective high school participating 8th graders will be attending during the 2024-2025 school calendar year;
  • Understanding how our programmatic efforts in the OST space are translating back to the in-school environment, particularly as it regards the acquisition of the SEL attributes and the stronger relationships with learning and school, peers and adults, and school community;
  • Setting an overall positive tone for the week in keeping with PYB’s values and approach;
  • Troubleshooting with other staff members, including the school liaisons
