Education First Compact – The Education Mayor: A Reporters’ Roundtable – Oct 12

Posted by Philadelphia Education Fund on October 3, 2023

As Philadelphia gets ready to elect its 100th Mayor, we ask: What does it mean to be Philadelphia’s Education Mayor? Join us to gain a historical perspective informed by past coverage from Philadelphia’s leading reporters!

Every election cycle, for Philadelphia voters, K-12 education ranks amongst the top five issues of greatest concern. This year is no different. In January, Philadelphians will inaugurate a new mayor – their 100th mayor. So, when it comes to K-12 education, what might we expect to see? What might we learn from the past?

At this October’s Education First Compact, we examine how past Philly mayors used their powers and their bully pulpit to influence K-12 education.

We ask: What are the Mayor’s powers? How have these powers grown or contracted over time? What were the signature education projects of past Mayors? And, how did they interface with the Superintendent, the Unions and the governing body of the School District of Philadelphia?

Join us at the National Constitution Center, as we convene an esteemed panel of Philadelphia journalists for a fascinating and retrospective look at former Philly mayors and their K-12 education efforts.

Date and Time: Thursday, October 12, 2023, 7:45-9:30 AM
