New Article:Empowering low-wage families and their children to gain economic security
Posted by Spotlight on Poverty and Opportunity on May 9, 2023
In this Spotlight Exclusive, we speak with Amy Klaben, co-founder of Move to PROSPER (MTP), a three-year program that empowers low-wage families and their children to gain economic security. MTP partners with landlords to offer partial rent support in higher-resourced neighborhoods, and combines that support with required coaching and programs for the parents. This one-on-one coaching helps the parents build skills, such as budgeting, wellness, parenting, and greater familiarity with careers that provide upward mobility. The program has proven successful with participating families, raising their income by 58% after three years. MTP has been supported by Ohio Republicans and Democrats who see the program as a way to provide both self-sufficiency to families and a path to more inclusive communities where zoning laws and other systemic problems have often kept families out. Looking towards the future Klaben says, the “plan is to take our model and expand to other cities, whether in Ohio or beyond.”
