AFAHO is committed to providing Health, Education and Social Services to the African and Caribbean immigrant and refugee community in the greater Philadelphia area. Our linguistic and culturally sensitive services make us a unique nonprofit organization. The Education Associate will be a key member of the Education Program. They will coordinate and lead the Adult Education Program by providing ESL Instruction, Digital Literacy, Driver’s Education, Citizenship Preparation and Job Coaching to AFAHO clients.

Position Summary

ESOL Instruction (English for Speakers of Other Languages) – 40%: Due to the high English language needs of our clients, AFAHO partners with the City of Philadelphia Office of Children and Families to provide a robust English language program that offers classes of various levels such as Basic Literacy, Beginner English, and Intermediate. The successful Associate will use a Smartboard and other games and activities to deliver engaging lessons to learners in order to enhance their Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking skills.

Digital Literacy – 20%: Through a partnership with Digitunity and AT & T, Adult learners are provided with state-of-the-art touchscreen laptops and Bluetooth headphones to engage in individualized self-paced lessons as well as group instruction and language specific assistance for adult learners with digital literacy needs. The Associate will be responsible for performing outreach, connecting clients to resources and collaborating with external partners to ensure a high-quality Digital Literacy Program

Driver’s Education – 10%: AFAHO partners with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to provide Driver’s Education Manuals and Workshops for clients in various languages such as Arabic, French, Mandingo, Swahili and English. The South 70th St. Location of PENNNDOT which is near AFAHO’s office enables clients to receive services from both locations conveniently. The Adult Education Associate/Coordinator will create Driver’s Education Workshops for clients in English and collaborate with partners and AFAHO staff to provide workshops in other languages.

Citizenship Preparation – 10%: Due to language barriers and low literacy rates, AFAHO’s clients benefit from Citizenship preparation classes to help them prepare for their citizenship tests. The successful candidate will teach classes and connect learners to other resources in preparation for their citizenship tests.

Job Coach – 15%: AFAHO provides coaching on resume and cover letter writing, interview preparations, and creating a pitch. The successful candidate will coach clients on how to use job search platforms such as Indeed, Simply Hired, Idealist, LinkedIn, etc. to create profiles and upload resumes. He/She will also collaborate with partners to connect clients to job opportunities.

Administrative/MSC – 5%
