Summer Teacher Institute at the Museum of the American Revolution – Jul 20

Posted by Museum of the American Revolution on July 19, 2022

The Museum of the American Revolution is excited to announce the return of in-person Summer Teacher Institutes! From August 15-19, we will welcome educators from the US and UK who have been participating in a professional development project in partnership with Balliol College (University of Oxford, UK) on the topic of slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. We still have a few spaces open in our program and invite you to complete an application to join us.

What Is the Project about?

Centered around Balliol College’s fall 2021 exhibit, Slavery in the Age of Revolution, this project brings together educators from the US (Greater Philadelphia) and the UK to discuss the teaching of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and slavery in the Age of Revolution in their classrooms. This summer, participating educators will:

  • Explore understandings of race in the 18th century
  • Delve into the experiences of both enslavers and the enslaved (including their efforts at agency and resistance)
  • Practice teaching with objects, artwork, and primary source documents as a method of engaging different types of learners across age, interest, and content knowledge levels.
  • Share resources, tools, and tips with one another and learn or further develop skills for engaging in sensitive and difficult conversations with their students and colleagues around these complex topics.

All while considering the complexity and contradictions of slavery in the age of Enlightenment.

There is no tuition or fee for accommodation (all local teachers are encouraged to stay at the institute hotel, for easier opportunities to build relationships with the UK teachers). Learning resources will be provided at no cost, and most meals will be covered.

Interested educators should submit their responses to the following form no later than Wednesday, July 20.
