Women for a Healthy Environment (WHE) is a nonprofit dedicated to educating and empowering community members to act as ambassadors about environmental risks. Through outreach and education, technical assistance and advocacy, WHE delivers programming that focuses on Healthy Homes, Healthy Schools and Healthy Early Learning Centers. The organization advocates for policy solutions that aim to better protect public health and reduce the risk of exposure to environmental harms.
The Program Assistant for the Healthy Buildings program (located in Philadelphia) works closely with the Healthy Buildings Program Manager to provide support, ensuring the program goals are being met. The successful candidate will be a socially conscious, enthusiast of the non-profit world, with demonstrated knowledge of environmental health issues. The candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in public health and experience in the non-profit field. Learn more about the Healthy Early Learning program.
Key responsibilities:
- Conduct Eco-Healthy Assessments of childcare facilities (eight childcare centers per/month);
- Establish a data collection system utilizing WHE’s database;
- Conduct research on organizational priorities including climate preparedness;
- Assist with indoor air quality (IAQ) monitoring with selected providers to determine indoor air quality and provide recommendations for behavior changes to improve IAQ;
- Assist in the development of webinars focused on various environmental health topics;
- Assist program manager in program data collection and evaluation;
- Attend and organize community events to educate and mobilize target populations;
- Represent WHE on local coalitions and networks;
- Assist in the development of WHE publications and resource materials, such as fact sheets, press releases, blogs and other written materials that effectively communicate organization objectives in a concise manner;
- Create regular communication with the childcare providers and staff (such as through a monthly newsletter and communicate via social media);
- Keep informed about scientific research and initiatives related to environmental health and healthy early learning centers.
Qualifications:
- Professional level of knowledge equivalent to that normally acquired through the completion of a bachelor’s degree from a college or any equivalent combination of experience and training. A./B.S. degree in the field of public health preferred.
- 3-5 years of experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment, including community outreach and programming.
- Experience in mobilizing key constituents, developing leadership and building grassroots support (preferred).
- Experience in group facilitation and coalition building skills (preferred).
- Extremely computer-proficient including MS Office and database applications.
- Understanding of website content management and social media.
- Strong attention to detail and proven organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to work well with diverse constituencies.
- Able to take initiative, think strategically, work cooperatively with a diverse group of people, and share responsibility and credit.
- Strong time management skills and the ability to respond to short deadlines.
- Experience in managing several projects simultaneously and the flexibility to move back and forth between projects when necessary.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills and solid writing and editing abilities.
- Ability to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Commitment to Women for a Healthy Environment’s mission, including a strong interest and knowledge in environmental health topics and exposures.

This position is part of an EPA grant that we have focused on outreach to childcare centers in the city on healthy practices. The salary will be in the $25,000 per year range. Start date would be July 18, 2022.
