Demonstrating the Potential of the Black Teacher Pipeline
Posted by The Center for Black Educator Development on November 30, 2021
Research shows Black students do better when they have Black teachers. Yet, in school districts across the country, the corps of Black teachers has been in steady decline, even in school districts with majority Black student populations, like the City of Philadelphia, where less than a quarter of the teachers are Black. In Pennsylvania, half of the school districts don’t have a single teacher of color.
Together, we can and must rebuild the Black Teacher Pipeline. Through our flagship programs, including Freedom Schools Literacy Academy and Liberation Academy, we’re demonstrating the potential of:
- Training future educator-activists.
- Activating Black history and pedagogy.
- Deepening and celebrating our racial identities.
