Posted by Pulitzer Center on October 19, 2021
World Food Day, a day of awareness and action for food justice, ending hunger, and sustainable agriculture was celebrated on October 16. Looking for resources to guide your students in exploring these themes on a local and global scale? We’ve rounded up lesson plans on food (in)security and sustainability for every grade level below:
- The Future of Food [Middle and High School] – This lesson plan by Chicago teacher Anne-Michele Boyle introduces the term ethical consumption and engages students in research and discussion about the environmental and social impacts of their eating habits.
- Food Justice: Planting the Seeds of Change [Middle and High School] – This five-day unit plan by Laredo, Texas teacher Rosa Clara Salazar introduces the concepts of food security and food justice, asks students to make local connections to global food justice issues, and guides students in sharing their learning through PSAs and/or poetry.
- How People Around the World Get Their Food [Elementary School] – This lesson plan from the Pulitzer Center education team guides students in comparing and contrasting between how people access food in their own community and in other places across the globe.
