Resources in Honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day

On October 11, we observed Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a holiday that honors the history and contemporary experiences of Native peoples in the Americas. In celebration, we’re highlighting a selection of stories for all grade levels that center Indigenous people, including stories about triumphs, resilience, and challenges Indigenous people are facing today.
- A Few Things to Know About Why Treaties Matter [Elementary, Middle, and High School] – This short video provides an introduction to the history and importance of treaties between Native nations and the U.S.
- The People’s Newspaper [Middle and High School] – This documentary short shows how The Navajo Times keeps the Navajo Nation informed and connected, even during the pandemic.
- Piapot Powwow [Elementary, Middle, and High School] – This photo story celebrates the significance of powwows and other Indigenous cultural and religious ceremonies, which were banned in Canada until 1951.
- Louisiana Tribe Lost Most of Its Homes to Hurricane Ida [Middle and High School] – This story explains Hurricane Ida’s impact on members of the Pointe-Au-Chien tribe, and how they are organizing to care for their community.
- Alaska Natives on the Front Line: Higher Education [High School] – This podcast episode shares how Alaska’s only tribal college supports its students with culturally relevant teaching.
