Challah for Hunger is a national nonprofit that trains thousands of young people to combat hunger in their communities and on their college campuses. Since 2004, we have grown from one chapter to more than 100 college and community based chapters in 30 states. In 2016, we launched the Campus Hunger Project to focus our efforts on supporting one of the hidden populations facing food insecurity: college students. Researchers estimate 39% of students at four-year universities and half of community college students don’t have regular access to nutritious food. The impacts of COVID-19 have only exacerbated the issue, with 3 out of 5 college students facing basic needs insecurity (food and housing) since campus closures.

The Campus Hunger Project (CHP), Challah for Hunger’s national initiative to combat campus food insecurity, has a mission to build and train a movement of people who act to end campus food insecurity. Our vision is that no college student is forced to choose between food and their education. Our current national initiative is the #FUELHigherEd campaign, a movement of individuals and organizations committed to advocating for fundamental, universal, equitable, and long-term state and federal policy solutions to college hunger.

The National Advocacy Intern (current US college student) will support the Campus Hunger Project in four main areas:

• Research: conducting frequent research and synthesizing new data on basic needs in higher education
• Tracking: updating weekly tracking reports on participation in Acts of Advocacy and impact of advocacy actions over time
• Communications: support with writing newsletters and social media posts relating to CHP research and advocacy actions
• Community building: individualized emails to campus network and relationship building with new organizational partnerships and volunteers
• Digital Action: Support managing digital action tools in EveryAction and help coordinate a national week of action in November
