2021 Kids Count Data Book

In the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s 32nd edition of the KIDS COUNT® Data Book, the foundation examines the well-being of children across the United States and the conditions they faced pre-, during, and post-pandemic. Millions of the nation’s children already lacked proper necessities – such as food, health care, and stable housing – before the pandemic, and the situation only worsened due to the coronavirus’s economic and public health impacts.
Research suggests children of color were hit hardest. While several of the foundation’s federal policy recommendations have already been enacted in the CARES Act, American Rescue Plan, and expansion of the federal child tax credit, these are only temporary fixes. As a result, the foundation proposes permanently expanding the federal child tax credit, strengthening state and local policies affecting kids and families, and prioritizing racial and ethnic equity in policymaking.
