Change the Subject: A documentary film and discussion – Apr 14
Posted by Haverford College on April 13, 2021
Melissa and Óscar noticed that the term “illegal alien” in Dartmouth’s library catalog refered to undocumented migrants. Their inquiries on when the term started to be used and how catalogue standards work from the Library of Congress to college libraries allow them to reflect on discriminatory labels, politics of language and the power of changing the subject.
What has changed in the Tri-co library system after watching this documentary film? How many other libraries have made the change?
Please join us for the screening of Change the Subject (54 min) and a conversation with Melissa Padilla, Jill Baron (BM alumni), and Emily Thaisrivongs (Haverford Metadata Librarian, Chair of the TriCo Catalog Governance Committee).
