New Article: What We Can Learn From the Pandemic To Close the Nutrition Gap
Posted by Spotlight on Poverty and Opportunity on April 13, 2021
In this week’s Spotlight Exclusive, Healthy Food Community of Practice Advisory Team describes the positive and innovative responses to address food and nutrition insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Advisory Team offers examples such as the YMCA that pivoted to become food distribution centers and Feeding America and Share Our Strength that raised millions of dollars to provide meals to families in need across the country. They also highlight important government policies set in place including increased funding for Pandemic-EBT, increased SNAP benefits, greater flexibility for enrolling in WIC, and loosening requirements for what foods are considered EBT-eligible. In order to maintain the forward progress, the Advisory Team recommends extending funding and expanding eligibility for nutrition assistance, maintaining flexibility around the process and in food access, and increasing culturally appropriate outreach and education.
