NCAN (Nat’l College Attainment Network) Style Guide

We published the NCAN (National College Attainment Network) Style Guide as part of our commitment to using inclusive terms and asset-based language in both external and internal communications (and helping our members to do the same). The guide includes terms we use and avoid, categorized by topic area, as well as resources for learning more about inclusive and antiracist language.
In addition to asset-based language, we also want to make style choices in our writing that promote equity. Listed are the terms we generally use (and don’t use) when mentioning race/ethnicity, economic status, and other identities or characteristics of a person or group. But whenever possible, we will use the language the individual/organization we are writing about prefers. This means you’ll often have to ask.
