Delco Foundation launches county “Coming of Age” site

Hundreds of nonprofit service organizations that need volunteers and learning institutions such as colleges, universities, high schools, libraries and senior centers that offer programs for older adults are being invited to enter their information onto a new website for 50+ residents sponsored by the Delaware County Community Foundation and the Delaware County Office of Services for the Aging.

In addition to featuring contact information for each nonprofit listed in the SERVE (volunteer) directory, the website will provide links to the nonprofits so that users can get more information about paid and unpaid opportunities.

The LEARN (lifelong learning) directory will include listing information and links for many of the estimated 115 learning institutions in  Delaware County who offer courses, classes, workshop and seminars of interest to older adults.

The website is part of a broader communication initiative developed by DCCF and COSA, in cooperation with Coming of Age, to provide residents with easy, multimedia access to information needs identified in a countywide study conducted in 2007.  People said they wanted a reliable source of information available through the Internet, television and radio and the local newspapers.  In response, DCCF and COSA have developed the Life Transition Network which, when fully implemented, will be the only comprehensive, multimedia community communication program for older adults in the country.

The Life Transition Network will include the website, a quarterly television program, special newspaper columns for 50+ readers and Life Transition information centers in libraries and senior centers throughout the county.

By the end of the year, the website will include three directories: SERVE for volunteering, LEARN for lifelong learning and EARN for employment opportunities in the county and the region.  The developers expect that over time, the website will become the primary single source in Delaware County for residents 50+ and their families when they need information about topics of interest to them.

To list their organizations on the website, nonprofits and learning institutions can go here, a temporary site built specifically to create the SERVE and LEARN directories.
