Saturday, October 10, 2009:
8:30 – 9AM Registration and Coffee
9 – 10AM Caring for Orchids in the Home

The presentation will include information and pictures about the types of orchids that succeed most readily indoors, how to grow on windowsills and under lights, how to repot, water, fertilize, display and group and recommended sources for quality orchids.

Stuart Hughes is a retired teacher of biological sciences. He has been growing and showing orchids since 1972, is active in the Southeastern PA and Greater Philadelphia Orchid Societies. He is also an orchid photographer for many groups and a frequent orchid talk presenter.

10 – 11AM Plant Sale
This Master Gardener propagated plant sale will feature choice woodies, perennials and orchids at truly amazingly low prices.

11 – 12PM Plight of the Honeybee
This presentation will provide an overview of beekeeping in urban settings, Colony Collapse Disorder and what gardeners can do to help. Don Shump is a volunteer beekeeper in one of Philadelphia’s oldest community gardens – Southwark/Queen Village Gardens. This apiary is a collection of hives that have thrived in downtown Philadelphia for more than a decade.

Saturday, November 14, 2009:
Woody Plants in Fairmount Park

Lori Hayes will take participants on a very informative Woody Plants tree walk throughout the Horticultural Center.

Master Gardener Lori Hayes is a Horticulturist, Certified Arborist and local lecturer. She is a 27 year Fairmount Park employee who is intimately acquainted with the trees at the Horticulture
Center in West Fairmount Park.

Saturday, January 9, 2010:
Seed Starting

Join us and learn how starting seeds indoors gives you a head start on the gardening season. Loretta DeMarco will talk about the materials you need to successfully start your seed, give tips on different seed germination requirements, and talk about the three distinct ways you can start seeds at this time of year – sowing in pots, sowing in baggies, and winter sowing.”

Master Gardener Loretta DeMarco is a past President of the Hardy Plant Society/Mid-Atlantic Group. She has done ornamental gardening for many years in Illinois, Ohio and now Pennsylvania and presents horticultural
talks for PHS.

Saturday, February 13, 2010:
Container Gardening
Master Gardener Susan Sipos is an artist/horticulturalist who owns and operates Sacred Gardens and Pottery, a design and installation firm.

Master Gardener Lucille Amadie has run GardenScapes since 2004. Together they specialize in container growing, and bring many years of experience and insights into their designs.

Saturday, March 13, 2010:
Gardening to Attract Butterflies and Hummingbirds
Master Gardener Carolyn Booker is a plant enthusiast with a varied home garden. She has been employed in the Green Industry for 12 years and does freelance landscape design, specializing in butterfly and hummingbird gardening.

Raingardens
Master Gardener trainee Antonio Federici has worked in natural resource management, designing wetland and stream restorations since 1996. He is currently managing The Backyard Buffer Program for the Philadelphia Water Department.

Master Gardeners are members of a “volunteer corps” that supports the programming efforts of the Pennsylvania State University Outreach Center in Philadelphia.
