New tool allows users to explore opportunities for occupational mobility
Posted by Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia on December 15, 2020
The Philadelphia and Cleveland Feds released the Occupational Mobility Explorer. The new data tool allows users to examine opportunities for workers to transfer their skills from one occupation to a similar β but higher-paying β occupation in the same labor market. The tool provides information on occupational transitions available in the 33 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. and makes available the data behind Exploring a Skills-Based Approach to Occupational Mobility.
Bringing this report to life, the new Occupational Mobility Explorer allows users to:
- build a path between occupations that require similar skills and result in at least a 10 percent pay increase.
- compare the most in-demand skills for occupations in a given metro area.
- view, sort, and download information on nearly 4,100 pairs of occupations that share very similar skill sets.
As millions of workers displaced during the pandemic reenter the job market, the Occupational Mobility Explorer can provide workforce development practitioners, community colleges, and employers with critical insights to inform their reskilling efforts and recruitment and hiring practices. To learn more about how communities are applying this research, please contact Kyle DeMaria at the Philadelphia Fed or Kyle Fee at the Cleveland Fed.
