How can precision medicine impact health equity? In this talk, cultural anthropologist Kadija Ferryman will provide a conceptual development of precision medicine from a focus on genetics to multi-dimensional “big data,”and examine how this emerging field can influence conceptions of health disparities as well as the potential for equitable health outcomes. Ferryman will share findings from her Fairness in Precision Medicine research study, which identifies how bias can be embedded in health data, and discusses the potential for data analytics to exacerbate health inequities. This talk argues for centering health equity as an ethical issue and suggests policy interventions that can advance equitable precision medicine.
