The power of community partnerships to address the Grand Challenges has been demonstrated throughout the history of Social Work. Community-university partnerships in particular have advanced this work through research, education and practice benefitting our understanding and ability to respond to contemporary challenges. This course will provide insights into the barriers and facilitators for successful collaborations.

Through two unique panels led by veteran community activists, non-profit leaders, social work researchers and local government participants will learn the key ingredients for successful collaborations and partnerships. The first panel will highlight social work–community collaborations on a variety of topics; while the second panel will focus on partnerships and coalitions that are addressing Philadelphia’s opioid crisis. Grounded in their own experiences, presenters will identify facilitative factors as well as barriers to community-based research, education and practice collaborations. Attention will be paid to how these partnerships address issues of diversity, power, and capacity building.
