New Article: Balancing academic rights and responsibilities
Posted by University World News on February 25, 2020
Netter Center director Ira Harkavy has a commentary in University World News on Balancing Academic Rights and Responsibilities. It is an edited version of a keynote he gave to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation International Quality Group Annual Meeting at the end of January. It focuses particularly on the connection of academic freedom and institutional autonomy to democratic work with the local community.
The concluding statement is particularly compelling: “Higher education should, indeed must, stand for core universal values, including tolerance, diversity and inclusivity, open inquiry, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Academic freedom and institutional autonomy as well as academic and institutional responsibility are necessary for universities to realise these values and to contribute to developing and sustaining fair, decent and just democratic societies for all.”
