Nonprofit Guidelines for Students
Posted by HE-SL Listserv on February 11, 2020
Here are some recent posts on guidelines for students who partner with local nonprofits:
Nonprofit AF has has a blog post about students partnering with local nonprofit out of requirements. Often times the community partner is left out of the conversation when it comes to community engagement within higher education, and this blog post highlights many of the challenges with community engagement from a nonprofit sector point of view. The post has some great suggestions for improvement. Guidelines: https://nonprofitaf.com/2020/02/guidelines-for-higher-education-programs-that-require-students-to-do-special-projects-with-nonprofits/
Campus Compact has assembled a “knowledge hub” on higher education community partnerships that is meant to be a resource for those in the field who wish to “dig deep” at: https://compact.org/community-partnerships/key-readings-on-campus-community-partnerships/.
You can find some of the frameworks and resources that are used across the Bonner Network on these pages on our open access Wiki. There are several articles (including some published studies) on the Documents to Download section of Building and Maintaining Partnerships. There are also lots of practical resources for programs to use. These resources reflect a framework in which campus-community partnerships can extend developmentally and across institutional programs from occasional service to sustained multi-year relationships involving multiple campus connections (i.e., to a multiyear student program, faculty and course-based projects, organizational/program capacity building projects, community-engaged research and knowledge production, and social action courses and projects). Some of the issue-based resources are aspirational; they are part of an ongoing conversation about what would it mean if programs across colleges and universities could identify and share proven program models across their centers and programs to achieve greater community impact?
