Volunteer during King Day 2020, Greater Philadelphia

Please join us as a volunteer on Monday, January 20, 2020, for the 25th annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service!

Come and join us another year to continue Dr. King’s legacy of citizen action, social justice, and meet the needs of the community. A mission of the King Day of Service is to continue community involvement year-round.

Thanks to volunteers like you, last winter 547,498 pounds of food were prepared and distributed and 10,402 care packages or hygiene kits were created and distributed to those in need. This year, we hope to mobilize even more volunteers to make an even greater impact. There are so many ways to serve! You can join an organized donation drive; attend a community gathering in you neighborhood, or gain awareness about an issue affecting your community. If you are interested in volunteering for the upcoming King Day of Service, you can explore current projects and opportunities by clicking here.

Here are a few projects in need of volunteers so far (*To access King Day of Service volunteer opportunities, you must create an account as a volunteer.*):

• The Choice is Yours’ Dr. Martin Luther King Day of HOPE – Volunteers will be setting up the distribution of food, clothes, toiletries, books, household items, and toys. They will also be assisting with the registration process.
• Second Chance Mission Inc.’s Filling the Cap – Volunteers will set up and prepare to serve hot food and distribute sandwiches to those experiencing homelessness. Volunteers will also distribute personal care packages.
• Cecil B Moore Recreation Center’s Clean Up – Volunteers will clean up and paint this community center.

We also encourage youth participation through the One King Day, One King Book initiative, which increases students’ understanding of Dr. King’s legacy and principles. Students in grade K-12 can read one of the book selections and submit an essay, drawing, poem, or medium of their choice to our office.
