Job Description Summary

The Upward Bound (UB) Counselor coordinates the counseling program for participants in each grade level (9th-12th) of the Program. The UB Counselor will conduct workshops and provide individual counseling pertaining to students’ educational goals and career aspirations. The Counselor will also meet with parents, target high school personnel and Upward Bound staff to monitor student progress toward completing high school. The UB Counselor will coordinate the initial recruitment and selection process for new students. The UB Counselor will also interact regularly with the higher education community to assist students in gaining admission, matriculating, and graduating from competitive postsecondary institutions. The Counselor will maintain student files and ensure all proper documentation is collected and filed.

Job Description

Position Duties:

  • Monitor student academic progress by assessing student needs and developing plans to meet those needs.

  • Maintain Access database of students and the activities in which they participate. Responsible for ensuring accurate documentation of services for each participant is maintained in every individual participant file, counseling log, and relevant program databases on a monthly schedule and kept current.

  • Liaison with target high school personnel to gather educational information (standardized test scores and grades).

  • Coordinate initial recruitment and selection process for new students.

  • Assist students with completion of college/university applications and FAFSA.

  • Assist students with scholarship searches and completion.

  • Meet with fellow staff members to update them of student progress.

  • Supervise graduate intern.

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Position Qualifications:

A Master’s Degree with a concentration in one of the following areas: Counseling, Education, or Social Work preferred  and 2 years to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working with high school students and ability to motivate students to reach their full potential. Demonstrated commitment to post-secondary access for public school students. Knowledge of the School District of Philadelphia and the Upward Bound philosophy is a plus. Must be highly organized and possess strong oral, written, and presentation skills. Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint required. Position contingent upon grant funding.
