This workshop and symposium will include hands-on activities for faculty to explore how to integrate community-based design into their curricula. The focus is on engineering technology and computing but the community-engagement principles and partnership models transcend disciplines. This workshop is appropriate for colleagues new to this work and those experienced. The EPICS model has been used as a first-year class, capstone design and many things in between. Participants will leave the workshop with an individualized plan for their own institution.
EPICS is an approach in which multi-disciplinary design teams address needs within local and global communities through engineering-centered design. Founded at Purdue University, EPICS has been integrated into the curriculum at 42 universities and colleges and growing. EPICS in IEEE, a signature program of IEEE, empowers students to work with local service organizations to apply technical knowledge to implement solutions for a community’s unique challenges.
