Making the Case for Making a Case… in Writing! – Feb 7
Posted by Philadelphia Education Fund on January 22, 2019
The Philadelphia Education Fund presents the Education First Compact Monthly Speaker Series, “Making the Case for Making a Case … in Writing!”. Join us for breakfast and discussion.
Date and Time: Thursday, February 7, 2019, 7:45-10:00 AM
Location: Philadelphia Education Fund, 718 Arch St., Suite 700N, Philadelphia, PA 19106
According to the National Commission on Writing in Schools and Colleges, writing is an essential skill for 80% of blue collar and 90% of white collar jobs. There’s no escaping it.
Writing is also an essential skill in a democracy. From our founding fathers to the present, it is the form through which we challenge ideas and engage in civil, civic discourse. Not trolling, texting, or Twitter, but thoughtful argument and debate.
Unfortunately, as an education community we are falling short in developing the writing and argumentation skills of our students. Results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reveal that 36% of both 12th and 8th graders rank below basic in writing proficiency and 40% of seniors who took the ACT evidenced poor preparation for college-level writing.
Join us, this February, and hear from those working nationally and locally on strategies designed to address this challenge – teaching students how to use the written form to persuade others, challenge their own thinking, argue and, most importantly, learn.
