Vol. 29, No. 4, Legacy Lived: A Generation of Ernest A. Lynton Award Recipients Advancing Community-Engaged Scholarship and Institutional Change
Dear Readers,In 1990, soon after the founding of CUMU, the first issue of Metropolitan Universities journal was published. It was, as it is today, devoted to the ‘nature and challenges’ of metropolitan universities. Ernest A. Lynton, whose work and dedication to creating effective collaborations between campus, community, and commerce led to the formation of CUMU, served as executive editor.
In the introduction to the first issue, Lynton wrote, “Our hopes and our expectations are high, as is our excitement about our new adventure. Will our excitement be justified, our hopes realized? Will Metropolitan Universities reach its intended audience?”
Nearly 30 years later, Lynton’s legacy lives on in CUMU, Metropolitan Universities, and an award, the Ernest A. Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement for Early Career Faculty, that bears his name.
Issue 29.4 ‘Legacy Lived: A Generation of Ernest A. Lynton Award Recipients Advancing Community-Engaged Scholarship and Change’ highlights the impact of Lynton’s work and how his vision for strong faculty and university engagement expanded views of scholarship and epistemology carries on through the work of faculty and campuses across the country.
I would like to thank Elaine Ward, Ed.D., assistant professor of higher education at Merrimack College, for serving as guest editor. Elaine’s tireless scholarship and work guided the development and execution of this issue.
Sincerely,
Valerie Holton, PhD, LCSW
