PA LIHEAP energy assistance program now available

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which provides financial assistance for home heating bills to keep low-income Pennsylvanians warm and safe during the winter months, is now open for 2018-19.

Applications for LIHEAP and LIHEAP Crisis, which serves those in immediate danger of being without heat, will be accepted through April 12. The amount of assistance received varies based on the number of people in the household and the type of home heating fuel. According to the Department of Human Services, which administers the program, last year more than 344,000 Pennsylvania households each received an average benefit of $337, totaling almost $116 million.

LIHEAP assistance is available to renters and homeowners who meet yearly income guidelines, which for the 2018-19 season are up to $18,210 for one person and $24,690 for two people. (Add $6,480 for each additional person in the household.) Anyone eligible for LIHEAP is encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
