2009 National Summit on Your City’s Families
October 11-13, 2009
Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel
425 Summer Street
Boston, MA 02210
Welcome to the nation’s largest gathering of municipal leaders who are working to improve the lives of children, youth, and families in their communities!
Two years ago, 450 mayors, councilmembers, senior municipal staff, and school and community partners from over 150 cities gathered in San Antonio at the 2007 Summit.
Now, as cities confront the nation’s worst recession in generations, city officials across the country are working to find creative solutions for ensuring the success of young people and financial security for their families. In 2009, NLC anticipates even stronger participation in what has become the premier event for local officials seeking to promote child and family well-being.
Helping Families in Tough Economic Times
The Summit’s high-quality training sessions, workshops, and site visits will feature cutting-edge city innovations and strategies for helping families cope with the economic crisis. Areas of focus will include:
# Family financial stability
# School improvement/dropout prevention
# Youth employment
# Afterschool programming
# Access to college
# Youth violence prevention
# Early literacy/school readiness;
# Youth civic engagement
# Childhood obesity prevention
# Strategies for reengaging disconnected youth
# Citywide “infrastructure” to sustain local initiatives
Keynote Speakers
City officials who attend the 2009 National Summit on Your City’s Families in Boston from October 11-13 will have the opportunity to hear keynote addresses from two innovative leaders — Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino and William E. Strickland, Jr., the inspirational president and CEO of Pittsburgh’s Manchester Bidwell Corporation.
