“Healing Our Divided Society: Investing in America Fifty Years After the Kerner Report” marks the 50th anniversary of the release of the Kerner Report, commissioned by President Lyndon B. Johnson following the 1967 summertime riots in Newark, New Jersey and Detroit, Michigan, among many other cities. The congresspeople, public officials and other public leaders who were appointed to the project, originally referred to as the President’s National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, were tasked with examining the following questions surrounding the riots: What happened? Why did it happen? What can be done to prevent it from happening again and again?
