Research and Policy related to Fair Housing Act
Posted by Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia on July 2, 2018
The Summer 2018 issue of Cascade reflects on the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act by exploring the current state of fair housing and fair lending. As you will read in this issue, there is a need for ongoing research and policy solutions to ensure that the goals of the act are achieved, including the elimination of discrimination in access to housing and mortgage credit. Realizing the goals of the Fair Housing Act will aid efforts to combat residential segregation and alleviate the racial wealth gap.
In this issue of Cascade, articles:
- Summarize a recent Research Symposium on the topic, hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia in partnership with the Center for Urban Research and education at Rutgers University–Camden;
- Explore the potential of Small Area Fair Market Rents (SAFMRs) to address residential segregation and improve the outcomes of the housing choice voucher program;
- Consider the future of fair housing in an interview with Philip Tegeler, president and executive director of the Poverty & Race Research Action Council (PRACC); and
- Outline five things to know about the Community Reinvestment Act and fair lending laws.
