Summer of Wonder reading program
Posted by Free Library of Philadelphia on May 28, 2018
According to a recent study nearly half of parents with children ages 6-17 (48%) have heard of the “summer slide,” with lower-income parents being far less likely to have heard of this (38%). One way to prevent the summer slide is for children to read extensively over the summer. Programs like the Free Library’s Summer of Wonder Program will begin this year on June 11th until August 3rd and encourages children and teens to read for fun by providing them with fun activity ideas, special events at their local libraries, and even prizes for reading. There are two ways for children to enter the Summer of Wonder program:
1. Visiting their local library: Children and teens get passport-style cards just for signing up in person. These passports will feature different themes that will give children access to age-friendly activities to complete at home or in the library.
2. Participating online: Online Summer of Wonder for all ages runs June 1 through August 31. Sign up online and earn badges by tracking minutes read and completing fun Discovery Path activities themed around STEAM, literacy, and exploration.
