Impact of Democracy Prep Public Schools on Civic Participation

Independent researchers from Mathematica just released a groundbreaking 10-year longitudinal study on the voter participation of Democracy Prep alumni.

The findings are nothing short of remarkable.

Our civic education program led to a statistically significant 24 percentage point raw increase in voter turnout in 2016.

These results are even more astonishing considering that our alumni are predominantly young (18-22), first-generation college students from low-income families of color–historically some of the least likely voters of any demographic group.

We founded Democracy Prep in 2005 with the motto: Work Hard. Go to College. Change the World! Our K-12 citizen-scholars work extremely hard and more than 85% of our alumni are now succeeding in the college of their choice. This new study proves that Katie Duffy and our DREAM Team of 1,000+ amazing educators are on the path to achieve the last part of our mission–a life of active citizenship.

Over the past decade at Democracy Builders we have continued to launch cutting-edge projects and organizations that serve more than ten thousand students and we are all incredibly proud of these results. However, the study is also a reminder of how much more work there still is to do.
