Combating Food and Housing Insecurity on Campus: Reclaiming the American Dream
In addition to the stress associated with final exams and maintaining grade point averages, more and more college students are silently struggling with hunger and homelessness. Recent research is uncovering evidence of food and housing insecurity among college students, as well as the relationship between measures of economic vulnerability and poor academic outcomes.
The May Shared Prosperity Roundtable will feature a presentation by Sara Goldrik-Rab, Professor of Higher Education Policy & Sociology at Temple University, and Founder of the Wisconsin HOPE Lab on the findings from the report Still Hungry and Homeless in College, which draws from a survey of 43,000 students across 66 academic institutions. We will also hear from representatives from Single-Stop, a program that enrolls community college students in public benefits, and Community Legal Services of Philadelphia on the recent changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) expanding eligibility to some community college students.
