Vol 29, No 1: Equity and Inclusion: Expanding the Urban Ecosystem

Dear Readers,

Our urban and metropolitan universities have for many years been addressing the needs and interests of increasingly diverse communities and a more diverse group of students, all of whom seek a welcoming environment when they join a campus community.

‘Equity and Inclusion: Expanding the Urban Ecosystem’ thoughtfully explores inclusion, moral imagination, the urban ecosystem, inclusive excellence, design thinking, and identity-consciousness.

As noted in the introduction of this issue, the “authors see our growing diversity as a much needed and valued source of energy, creativity and a vital contribution to our capacity to thrive in an especially challenging period in our history and are committed to creating educational environments where people of all backgrounds can thrive.”

This issue is meant to spark difficult, but necessary, conversations. I hope you will take time to read and share this issue with your colleagues, so that your institutions can have the necessary conversations that lead to action.

I would like to thank Tia Brown McNair, Association of American Colleges and Universities, and Judith Ramaley, Portland State University, for serving as guest editors. Their scholarship and tireless work to create more equitable and inclusive environments guided the development and execution of this issue.

Best Regards,
