Information and Application
PowerCorpsPHL is accepting applications from college students and recent graduates to serve as Summer AmeriCorps members with our crews across the city. Summer AmeriCorps members will provide some or all of the following, depending on need and qualifications: peer mentoring, literacy tutoring, and career planning and transition support to our corps members. In the process, Summer AmeriCorps members will both serve alongside corps members to assist on the crews’ green infrastructure improvement projects and conduct one-on-one or small group sessions to address corps members’ needs.
About PowerCorpsPHL
Launched in September 2013, PowerCorpsPHL is a City of Philadelphia AmeriCorps initiative, administered in partnership with EducationWorks. It is designed to support Philadelphia’s environmental stewardship, youth violence prevention and workforce development priorities.
PowerCorpsPHL engages disconnected young adults, ages 18 to 26, in transforming their lives through service. During their term of AmeriCorps service, corps members work with partner City departments to tackle pressing environmental challenges, including the need for improved stormwater management, increased tree coverage, and revitalized public land. Upon completion of their service, alumni receive intensive transition support designed to enhance their chances for success in career-track employment, post-secondary education, and/or additional national service.
Responsibilities
Summer AmeriCorps members will provide critical support to PowerCorps members during the second half of their AmeriCorps service term as they prepare to transition to the next step on their career path and beyond. Specifically, Summer AmeriCorps members are expected to:
• Serve with a PowerCorpsPHL crew to complete environmental service projects
• Mentor, coach, and support PowerCorpsPHL corps members
• Tutor corps members on an as needed basis
• Model professional behavior, work ethic, and habits
• Assist corps members with goal setting, career planning, resume writing, and immediate next steps for a successful transition from PowerCorpsPHL
Schedule
Summer AmeriCorps members will serve on existing PowerCorpsPHL crews from Monday to Friday (and occasional Saturdays) in sites around the city for a minimum of 450 hours over the 12-week term (approximately 40 hours per week). Summer AmeriCorps members are expected to be available starting Monday, May 14th through Friday, August 3rd ~Monday through Friday, 7:45am-3:30pm and an occasional evening and weekend.
Benefits
Summer AmeriCorps members will receive a living allowance of $484 every two weeks, before taxes. In addition, Summer Specialists who complete their service term of 450 hours will receive an education award of $1,527.45. This award, which is subject to taxation, can be applied to any federally backed loan or used to pay tuition in the future. Finally, Summer AmeriCorps members will receive a weekly SEPTA transpass.

Applicant Requirements
Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 26 years old, be currently enrolled or recently graduated from college, and have strong written communication skills. Applicants with mentoring, tutoring, education, and/or counseling experience, especially with diverse groups, are strongly preferred.
