Early Childhood Education Internship, Puentes a las artes
Posted by Puentes de Salud on December 18, 2017
Application deadline: January 5th, 2018
Description
We seek highly motivated individuals from all backgrounds to serve as interns in our after-school program for children ages 3-4. Puentes de Salud serves Philadelphia’s rapidly growing Latino immigrant community through an integrated approach to health, education, and wellness. Our education branch, Puentes Hacia el Futuro , is predicated upon the well-evidenced fact that education is inextricably tied to the health of individuals and communities. Our goal is to holistically support the education and development of our community’s children to foster positive long-term health outcomes. Interns will have the unparalleled opportunity to work and to learn at the intersection of social justice, migration, and urban education in a community-based, bilingual environment. Interns will be able to build close relationships with a small group of students and work closely as part of our team. Interns may use this work to fulfill academic field work, internship, or independent study requirements.
Puentes a las artes / Bridge to the Arts
In partnership with the Barnes Foundation , we are creating the newest program in our educational offerings. This project will support emergent bilingual learners in developing strong foundations for life-long literacy. Children will use art as a launching point to amplify their bilingual vocabulary and to foster critical thinking and observational skills in a culturally-relevant program. Weekly after-school classes will involve bilingual read alouds, literacy-focused activities, and art observation and making. In addition to the after-school portion, the program will offer monthly art and literacy workshops and free visits to the Barnes’ collection to foster multi-layered engagement with rich learning experiences in and outside of the classroom.
Responsibilities include:
● Supervise a small, consistent group of students (approximately 4 children).
● Engage students in daily literacy, art-making, and curricular activities.
● Support group leader in classroom management, facilitation of activities, and other tasks.
● Actively contribute to group reflection meetings.
