The Free Library of Philadelphia’s Culinary Literacy Center is seeking kitchen teachers for its school visit program, Nourishing Literacy. This is a great opportunity for people who have a flexible schedule, are interested in food access and cooking, have a creative, energetic nature, and are skillful in working with children and older youth.

Teachers will use a pre-designed curriculum and will be part of a small cohort that we hope to be an important part of the program’s growth.

We will be hiring through the end of October, with plans to offer a Nourishing Literacy training in early November. If you are unsure your experience meets the listed qualifications, but have transferable skills, and are a quick learner with a passion for working with youth in a dynamic way, please do not hesitate to submit an application. Nourishing Literacy Kitchen Teacher
2017/2018 School Year
Hours vary depending on need, estimated between 8 to 16 hours per month

The Free Library of Philadelphia’s Culinary Literacy Center opened in June of 2014, providing innovative and accessible public programming to children and adults throughout Philadelphia. The Culinary Literacy Center’s mission is to advance literacy through food and cooking around a communal table. Our goal is to do this work in a way that inspires curiosity and fun among participants.

Nourishing Literacy
Nourishing Literacy is the Culinary Literacy Center’s multidisciplinary school visit program. Participating students range in preschool through middle school, ranging in group sizes from twenty to thirty-six students. Lessons connect cooking to literacy, nutrition, and the Common Core standards in meaningful and approachable ways. The program is designed to be enjoyable for the students, with the creative inclusion of academic learning opportunities and concepts. Each lesson is part of a larger unit that includes optional activities and information that can be used by the classroom teacher to implement before and after the kitchen visit.

Nourishing Literacy Kitchen Teacher Position
Now in its fourth year, Nourishing Literacy kitchen teachers will have the opportunity to be part of the program’s growth. Kitchen teachers will use a predesigned curriculum to teach one or more age groups (PK through 1st grade, 2nd through 4th grade, and 5th through 8th grade). In addition to teaching, kitchen teachers will oversee the involvement of classroom teachers, chaperones, and volunteers during the lesson. The program takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays, from 10:00 to 11:30 AM and from 1:00 to 2:30 PM.

Qualifications
• Experience leading engaging, hands-on activities to groups of children and young adults, with positive and effective classroom management skills
• Background working in food and/or nutrition
• Ability to work on feet for 6 hours at a time
• ServSafe Certified (reimbursement available for ServSafe Food Handler online certification)
• Completion of PA Criminal Background Check, Child Abuse Background Check, and FBI Fingerprinting
