Teacher Residency Program

The Philadelphia Teacher Residency is a one-year, full-time teacher preparation program that recruits talented college graduates and career changers and gives them the tools needed to make an immediate impact in the classrooms of the School District of Philadelphia.

Combining a year-long classroom apprenticeship with exceptional teachers and targeted certification coursework, the residency will prepare you to be a life-changing teacher. The cost of the program is waived for participants who commit to three years of teaching at an SDP school.

About the Residency:

The residency begins with an intensive summer institute, designed to prepare residents with the skills and knowledge needed to serve as part of a teacher team on day one of the school year.

Residents then spend the entire academic year with one of our partners, learning to teach in a collaborative mentoring environment. Residents are assigned to an academic department and grade level team and work under the close guidance of experienced educators. Residents devote one evening to completing the program’s rigorous graduate coursework. This combination helps Residents link classroom experience to relevant theory and research, learn and rehearse new instructional practices, and ground their own learning in their students’ learning and school context.

How to Apply:

• PASS PRAXIS/PECT EXAM BEFORE APPLYING TO RESIDENCY
• Hold a bachelor’s degree by the start of the program
• Commit to teaching at an SDP school (non-charter) for 3 years after residency year
• Meet all SDP employment requirements including state and federal background checks
